The Sacromonte Caves Museum is one of those museums that leaves no one indifferent. It sits in the upper part of Granada's historic Roma quarter and boasts stunning views over the Darro valley and the Alhambra. It's located in the Barranco de los Negros, with superb views of the Alhambra and the Darro river valley (Valparaíso), right in the heart of the Sacromonte neighbourhood and next to the Albaicín.
Here you can visit 11 historic caves that offer insight into the history of Granada's Roma community and how it has evolved to the present day. In this ethnographic and environmental museum, ten caves have been recreated as they were 100 years ago, allowing visitors to learn about the customs, history and evolution of Sacromonte and its inhabitants.
This museum is, without doubt, one of the most striking in the city of Granada. It takes a fair walk to get there, but the reward is well worth it. Here you can discover, first-hand, the legacy Sacromonte has given the world.
What to see at the Sacromonte Caves Museum
The various caves are devoted to housing, flamenco, livestock, basket-weaving, cooking, forging, ceramics and weaving, and caves of the world. Through a range of objects, each space recreates what life was like in these caves, decorated with the tools and everyday items used at the time.
During your visit to the Sacromonte Caves Museum, you can step inside a cave-dwelling, a cave-kitchen and a cave-stable. Most of Sacromonte's cave-dwellers made their living from basket-weaving, pottery, forging and other traditional crafts.
The museum displays lamps, ceramic vessels, stoves and looms that show what daily life was like for the neighbourhood's earliest inhabitants, mainly Roma and Muslim families.
The audiovisual rooms help visitors learn about the legacy of flamenco and the neighbourhood's traditions. The museum traces the origins of Sacromonte from the sixteenth century, when Roma and Muslim communities first began settling there, right up to the present day. It was through the blending of cultures that flourished in this neighbourhood that flamenco took shape, an art form to which the museum also devotes a dedicated space.
The Sacromonte Museum also has a Nature Classroom offering information about the flora, fauna, climate, landscape and agriculture of the area.
