Guided Visit to Granada Cathedral
The first Renaissance cathedral in Spain was built in Granada. Its full name is the Holy and Apostolic Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of the Incarnation of Granada, and construction began in 1523 on the site of the city's old great mosque. Charles V commissioned Diego de Siloé to turn the original Gothic project into something unprecedented: five naves, a circular Main Chapel with a 22-metre dome and an interior that accumulates more than a century and a half of art, with 16th-century stained glass and paintings by Alonso Cano.
How the Visit Unfolds Between Bib Rambla, the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral

On entering, the first thing that strikes you is the brightness of the interior. The five naves are whitewashed and the high windows let the light in in a way that is unusual in 16th-century Spanish cathedrals. Diego de Siloé designed it that way deliberately, moving away from Gothic gloom.

The route moves on to the Main Chapel, the most singular space in the building. Siloé laid it out on a circular plan, something unprecedented in Spanish religious architecture of the time. It is 22 metres in diameter and crowned by a blue dome with golden stars. It is surrounded by 24 stained-glass windows, ten of them designed by Siloé himself. To reach it you pass under the great arch, 32 metres high and 12 wide, with four stone figures: Adam and Eve, the Apostle James and Saint Cecilius, first bishop of Granada.

On the walls of the Main Chapel are the seven paintings on the life of the Virgin by Alonso Cano, the 17th-century Granada artist whose work is very present throughout the interior. The side chapels concentrate paintings by other masters such as Pedro Bocanegra and Juan de Sevilla. The visit also includes the sacristy, where Alonso Cano's Immaculate Conception is kept.

Accessibility
Access for people with reduced mobility is via the entrance on Calle Pie de la Torre, which has a ramp, although a steep one. We recommend coming with a companion. The interior of the nave is on one level except for the sacristy, which has two steps at its entrance. The monument has no public toilets.

View on Google MapsThis tour should not been taken by anyone who is not in pretty good physical condition as there are a LOT of steps and lots of walking. That said, this two part tour was brilliant. Both guides we had were friendly and very knowledgeable and made the tours interesting. We took the bus (C32) from the Isabel la catolica stop and got it back to the same stop. You can walk but we were so tired after the tour we decided not to. Definitely a tour we would recommend.

Besides giving us history lessons and stories, she also offered tips and places to go for food and scenery. All in all, a very pleasant and enjoyable tour. Love to do it with her on another tour.
