Guided Tour of Granada's Royal Chapel
On this guided visit you will learn the history of the building, the art of its tombs and the context of the most decisive moment in Granada's history: the passage from the Muslim city to the Christian one. In 1492, after the conquest of Granada, Isabella I and Ferdinand II commissioned Enrique Egas to build their mausoleum in the centre of the city: the Royal Chapel of Granada, the last Gothic building raised in the Iberian Peninsula. Alongside the Catholic Monarchs rest their daughter Joanna I of Castile and her husband Philip I the Handsome. The sacristy preserves Queen Isabella's personal collection, with Flemish paintings, jewels and personal objects that have remained in the same place since the 16th century.
ITINERARY OF THE ROYAL CHAPEL TOUR

The route begins outside, where the Gothic façade by Enrique Egas introduces the style of the building: the last Gothic of the Iberian Peninsula, built when the Renaissance had already reached other parts of Spain. Next to the façade is the Lonja de Mercaderes, built in the same period to regulate trade around the chapel.

Inside, the space is organised around the four royal tombs. Those of Isabella I and Ferdinand II, by Domenico Fancelli, and those of Joanna I and Philip I the Handsome, carved by Bartolomé Ordóñez, are two of the most important pieces of Renaissance funerary art in Spain, both carved in Carrara marble. Beneath the altar is the crypt, where the original coffins lie. The high altarpiece, by Felipe Vigarny, is an outstanding example of Spanish Plateresque art.

The route ends in the sacristy, which works as a museum. Here Queen Isabella's personal collection is kept: Flemish paintings, including works by Hans Memling and Rogier van der Weyden, crowns, sceptres, devotional objects and original manuscripts of the monarchs.

The route closes at the Madraza, the Islamic building next to the Royal Chapel. Its history is explained and, if it is open, we go up to the Sala de Caballeros XIV to see the Nasrid coffered ceiling, one of the most elaborate preserved in Granada.

What is included
Official guide, entry to the Royal Chapel of Granada and visit to the Madraza.
When the group has more than 6 people, wireless audio guides are compulsory to keep the volume appropriate inside the monument. They are not included in the price.

10:30 every day. On Sundays departure is at 15:00.
Accessibility
The main areas of the Royal Chapel are accessible for people with reduced mobility, with ramps at the entrances. The crypt has limited access. We recommend contacting us before the visit for any specific needs.

The meeting point is Plaza de Bib-Rambla, next to the Fuente de los Gigantes. The guides wait with an orange umbrella. We recommend arriving 10 minutes before the start time to find the group with some margin.

View on Google MapsThis tour should not been taken by anyone who is not in pretty good physical condition as there are a LOT of steps and lots of walking. That said, this two part tour was brilliant. Both guides we had were friendly and very knowledgeable and made the tours interesting. We took the bus (C32) from the Isabel la catolica stop and got it back to the same stop. You can walk but we were so tired after the tour we decided not to. Definitely a tour we would recommend.
