The Royal Chapel of Granada holds one of the most important chapters in the city's history after the conquest of 1492. Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon chose this spot to build their mausoleum, commissioned to Enrique Egas, right in the historic centre, next to the Cathedral.
On this guided visit you'll enter the monument with an official guide and ticket included to see the building, its tombs and the crypt where the monarchs' original coffins are kept. Here rest the Catholic Monarchs, together with Joanna I of Castile and Philip I the Handsome.

The visit begins outside the Royal Chapel, next to the Cathedral area. From there, the guide sets out the building's origin and explains why the Catholic Monarchs chose Granada as their burial place after the conquest of 1492.
Before going in, you'll see the Gothic façade linked to Enrique Egas and the surroundings of the former Lonja de Mercaderes (Merchants' Exchange), built in the same period next to the monument.
Once inside, the tour focuses on the royal tombs. You'll see those of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, by Domenico Fancelli, and those of Joanna I of Castile and Philip I the Handsome, by Bartolomé Ordóñez. These are key works of Renaissance funerary art in Spain, carved from Carrara marble.
Beneath the altar is the crypt, where the monarchs' original coffins are kept. It's a brief part of the visit, but it helps you understand the difference between the monumental tombs above and the actual burial place below.
The route continues to the main altarpiece, by Felipe Vigarny, and finishes in the sacristy, home to Queen Isabella's personal collection. There you can see Flemish paintings, jewellery, devotional objects and original manuscripts linked to the monarchs.
