Albaicín and Sacromonte Tour in Granada
Granada is one of the few cities in Europe where Iberian, Roman, Muslim and Christian remains coexist. Most of that historical weight is concentrated in two neighbourhoods: the Albaicín, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994, with its Nasrid architecture of cobbled lanes, Granada cármenes, medieval cisterns and Mudéjar churches built over former mosques; and the Sacromonte, whose name means "sacred mountain", the old Valparaíso hill where the gypsies settled after the Christian conquest and built a culture of their own among cave houses dug into the rock, with direct views of the Alhambra and the tablaos where the zambra flamenca was born.

We set off from Plaza de Santa Ana, where there is a historical introduction before starting. From there we go down to the Carrera del Darro, flanked by the river Darro and 16th-century mansions. Along this walk there are three stops: the Puente de los Tableros, one of the few 11th-century defensive bridges with preserved archaeological remains; the Bañuelo, 11th-century Arab baths belonging to the Dobla de Oro; and the Maristán, Granada's first hospital, currently under restoration.

Climbing into the Albaicín we pass the Convent of Zafra and the house of Hernando de Zafra, secretary to the Catholic Monarchs. The next stop is the Church of San Juan de los Reyes, the first mosque turned into a church after the Christian conquest, which preserves one of the only original minarets in the city next to an 11th-century wall tower. Further up is the Aljibe del Trillo, part of the Nasrid hydraulic system that supplied Granada until the 20th century.

At the Casa de Aben Humeya we explain the War of the Alpujarras and the expulsion of Muslims and Moriscos from the peninsula. The Mirador de San Nicolás, former site of the Alcazaba Cadima, offers views of the Alhambra, Sierra Nevada and the Generalife. From there we continue to the Church of El Salvador, where the sanbenitos of those condemned by the Spanish Inquisition were hung.

The Vereda de Enmedio is the passage between the Albaicín and the Sacromonte. Once in the Sacromonte, the Caves Museum explains how they are built by digging into the rock and who lives in them. At the Fuente de la Amapola the first side views of the Alhambra open up. The Mirador de Mario Maya offers full views of the Alhambra, the city and the Sacromonte Abbey, the building whose discovery of relics gave the neighbourhood its current name, previously known as Valparaíso.

The descent runs past the caves turned into flamenco tablaos, where the origin of the zambra flamenca in the Sacromonte is explained. Next to the Statue of Chorrojumo we tell the story of this Granada character, a pioneer of visits to the Alhambra in the 19th century. The tour ends at the Paseo de los Tristes, at the foot of the Alhambra.

Meeting point
Plaza de Santa Ana, next to the Church of San Gil y Santa Ana. The guides wait with an orange umbrella. We recommend arriving 10 minutes before the start time.
Accessibility
The route is not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The whole way includes climbs, steps and cobbles. On rainy days the ground in the Albaicín is slippery; non-slip footwear is recommended.

Families, children and pets
The visit is suitable for families with children. As it is not accessible with a pushchair, a baby carrier is recommended. Pets are allowed.
CANCELLATION AND CHANGES POLICY
The visit can be cancelled 24 hours in advance at no cost. If the cancellation is made with less notice or you do not show up without prior warning, no refund is made, unless you contact us by phone with a justified reason.
The tour runs in any weather. In the event of a strong storm that could pose a risk on the slopes and cobbles of the neighbourhoods, customers are contacted in advance to arrange the cancellation. The tour can be rescheduled at any of the available times.

We did the Alhambra and Palacios Nazaríes tour and were incredibly lucky to have Amelia as our guide. From the very beginning, she gave us such a warm and organized welcome, she knew exactly who was in her group and took the time to have everyone introduce themselves, which immediately made the experience feel personal and comfortable. Her knowledge is exceptional, but what really sets her apart is how she explains things. She makes history so easy to understand and genuinely interesting. One moment that really stood out to me was the way she explained the wooden ceilings, something I would have completely overlooked on my own, but she made it fascinating. Amelia is energetic, funny, incredibly patient, and very caring. She constantly checked in on everyone, made sure we were comfortable, and never made the tour feel rushed. The pacing was perfect. Even if someone needed a quick stop, she made sure everyone felt included and taken care of. One of the things I appreciated most was how engaged she kept the group the entire time. She has a natural way of making everything feel alive and enjoyable, not like a typical “information-heavy” tour. She also went above and beyond by helping us take photos and pointing out the best photo spots, which made a huge difference. On top of that, she gave great tips at the end for places to eat and additional spots to visit within the Alhambra. Honestly, if I had done this on my own, I would have missed so much. In just a few hours, I learned and experienced far more than I ever could have by myself. I left feeling truly grateful. I recommend this company and Amelia 3000%, the tour was absolutely amazing.

View on Google MapsThis tour should not been taken by anyone who is not in pretty good physical condition as there are a LOT of steps and lots of walking. That said, this two part tour was brilliant. Both guides we had were friendly and very knowledgeable and made the tours interesting. We took the bus (C32) from the Isabel la catolica stop and got it back to the same stop. You can walk but we were so tired after the tour we decided not to. Definitely a tour we would recommend.
