Choosing how to visit the Alhambra and the Nasrid Palaces changes the experience a lot. It is not the same to explore the complex on your own with a basic audio guide as to do it in a small group with an official guide, or to have a private tour where you can adapt the pace and explanations to your interests.
How the Alhambra can be visited
The Alhambra can be visited in three main ways:

On the plus side, you can spend longer in the courtyards, viewpoints and gardens that catch your attention most, always respecting the Nasrid Palaces time.
The main limitation is that the audio guide does not replace an official guide who adapts the visit to the group. The information is usually correct, but more general and less flexible, since it does not answer questions live or adjust to your level of knowledge.
And you will have to keep a close eye on the itinerary inside the Alhambra and the exact entry time to the Nasrid Palaces, without the support of someone setting the pace.
Visiting the Alhambra on a group guided visit
The group guided visit to the Alhambra is the most balanced option for most travellers. It includes the full general ticket (the Nasrid Palaces at their assigned time, the Alcazaba, the Palace of Charles V, the Partal and the Generalife Gardens) and the company of an official guide who organises the route, manages the timings and adapts the explanation to the group. An audio system is usually used so you can listen comfortably even in the busiest areas.
Compared with the audio guide, a guided visit in your language lets you understand the monumental complex much better, ask questions, stop at details that would otherwise go unnoticed and stop worrying about fitting in the Nasrid Palaces time.
In return, you will have to go along with a time and pace shared by the whole group. That is why we usually recommend the small-group guided tour as the most comfortable option if it is your first time at the Alhambra or if you want to make the most of the three hours of visiting without worrying about logistics.
Visiting the Alhambra on a private tour
Visiting the Alhambra on a private tour is the most flexible and personalised option. It includes the full general ticket (the Nasrid Palaces at their assigned time, the Alcazaba, the Palace of Charles V, the Partal and the Generalife Gardens), but with an official guide dedicated only to your family, partner or group of friends. The pace, the level of detail and the focus of the explanation adapt to what interests you: from a more historical visit to something more visual and light if you come with children.
It is the most advisable option if you want to avoid large groups, if someone in the group has reduced mobility or special needs, or if you simply prefer a relaxed route, with time to stop in the courtyards, take photos and ask everything that occurs to you. The guide organises the itinerary around the Nasrid Palaces time and your preferences, so the experience is as comfortable and complete as possible.

If it is your first time at the Alhambra
The most advisable is a group guided visit with a full ticket, to get a clear picture of the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba, the Generalife and the Palace of Charles V without worrying about times or routes.
If you are travelling as a couple and want a calmer experience
You can choose a small-group visit or a private tour, where the pace and explanations adapt more to what interests you.
If you are travelling as a family or with children
A guided tour is more comfortable (better if small-group or private), with a guide used to adapting the visit, avoiding unnecessary waits and scheduling breaks well.
If you already know the Alhambra and want to go back at your own pace
In that case, the general ticket with audio guide makes sense: you already know your way around the enclosure and can focus on the spaces you like most.
If you have very little time in Granada
The most practical option is a full guided visit at a fixed time, which in about three hours lets you see the essentials without wasting time on slot changes or doubts about the itinerary.

Designed for those who have already visited the Nasrid Palaces or do not need to repeat them. On this visit we focus on the Alcazaba fortress, the historic gardens and the Renaissance palace of Charles V, with time for the views of Granada and to better understand how the complex evolved.
Private Tour of the Alhambra
The same full Alhambra, but only for your group. The content and pace adapt to what interests you most: families, groups of friends, travellers looking for a more leisurely explanation or a very specific focus. It is the most comfortable option if you want a personalised experience inside the monumental complex.
